Intraocular malignant melanoma is rare, but it is the most common primary intraocular malignancy in adults. The most frequent of intraocular malignant melanoma is choroidal melanoma. Previously we compared the usefulness of I-123 IMP SPECT and F-18 FDG PET for the detection of choroidal malignant melanoma on the same patients. It has been demonstrated that I-123 IMP SPECT is a sensitive and accurate method for the detection of choroidal malignant melanoma, whereas the efficacy of F-18 FDG PET for this purpose is low because of a high incidence of false-negative results (1). Furthermore, we have demonstrated that I-123 IMP SPECT is superior to F-18 FDG PET and F-18 FDOPA PET for the detection of choroidal malignant melanoma (2). We are currently examining the efficacies of not only F-18 FDG PET, but C-11 methionine PET, C-11 choline PETF-18 FDOPA PETF-18 FLT PET, and F-18 fluoride PET to detect a variety of malignant tumors.

Novelty and originality of this research

Based on a comparison of the utility of different methods of detecting choroidal malignant melanoma, we demonstrated that I-123 IMP SPECT is a superior test method to all others.
